Ten month old, seal (black) and white IG lost in Odessa on Thanksgiving Day. New owners just got him and were out walking him on leash when the leash got away from them. Odessa is Northwest of Tampa. Last seen on Angel Lane near Colley Road. Owners are devastated. They are from Jacksonville and have to head back today, if anyone knows someone in rescue in the area they would appreciate any help locating him. His name is Pico but likely he does not know his name. He's extremely afraid.

  • Interests:My main interest is loving and caring for my 2 IG girls, Allie and Riley, as well as my cat, Sabrina. I adore all animals, but I have a passion for IGs. This passion began with my first IG, Tara, who is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge. I love anything that involves IGs; spending time with Allie and Riley, attending East Coast IG Rescue events, SHOPPING for Allie's and Riley's wardrobes, and of course, communicating with other IG Whispers members. Aside from IGs, my interests include reading a variety of genres and being with friends and family, especially my 13 year old niece, Ella. Professionally, I am a reading specialist for first and second grades. Although I enjoy teaching, the best thing about my job is the long summer vacation, during which I am free to spend endless hours with Allie and Riley.

So sad...I can't imagine losing one of my babies. He must be terrified. I'm hoping and praying for his safe return.

so sorry to hear about your cousin's IG. Here is a link to Florida IG Rescue>Contact Us>West Coast "Rachel" (def contact Rachel)
http://www.floridaig...o...=1&Itemid=3

Of course I would contact ALL the local shelters in the area to file a report w/pictures
Contact ALL the local vets with a flyer w/pictures
post flyers w/pictures in the area and on store front windows
Post an add on Craigs List in the Tampa and surrounding areas w/pictures

Also, send me a complete description, pictures, circumstance surrounding her going missing, area she was lost in, ect. and my Friend Vicky will post in on another website. Also post on IGW w/pictures and give permission to cross post on other forums. Send me any info and I will even post on my FB page.

My friends IG was lost for 11 days last year after the lawn guy left a gate open....he was found and my friend contacted because the first place they looked was on Craigs List. I hope he is chipped and tagged as well.

Just curious, Trena...were the owners using a retractable leash?

Thank you for the information Linda. The area he was lost in is very rural. We have done all the items you list, except we hadn't yet done the Craigs List. Thanks for that insight, we are on it. I'm not sure if being in a rural area is good or bad.

He did not have a collar and was not chipped. They had just gotten him less than 24 hours earlier. He was an older puppy (10 months), rescue and was very afraid. Not mean or anything just frightened. They were using a martingale type leash, NOT a retractable one. I had told them he need to be on a leash, he would run if he wasn't leashed securely. He apparently just caught them off guard and surprised the owners and the leash got away from them. They tried for over 6 hours to get him back but he was just too afraid and ran every time they were near.

So now you have me curious, what's up with retractable leashes?

So now you have me curious, what's up with retractable leashes?

I've just heard a few stories of dogs catching their owners off guard while they held onto the plastic handles of retractable leashes...then as the dog runs away...the bouncing plastic handles that house the leash, bounces along the ground completely freaking the dog out...

This happened recently to Mariella...and her puppy, Sophie. As they walked home from the park, by Biscayne Bay, in Miami, Sophie made a sudden jerk to the leash and Mariella dropped the handle....as the handle bounced on the concrete sidewalk, Sophie took off like a rocket and crossed Biscayne Blvd, a very heavily trafficed road....Mariella could not keep up with Sophie....then a guy on a bicycle jumped off his bike and started after Sophie.....Sophie ran between two condos and JUMPED INTO BISCAYNE BAY....OFF THE SEAWALL....the guy jumped into the bay and safely retrieved Sophie and handed her back to Mariella, who was waiting on land. Mariella called me that night and was still in a state of shock of almost loosing her pup to either getting lost, getting hit by a car, or drowning.

She got rid of the retractable leash and now uses a normal leash where she can put her hand through the loop, then firmly grip the leash. It's so easy to loosen your grip as you liesurely take a walk with your dog.....you just never know when they will react and jerk the end.

I am so sorry that this pup is still lost. Def post on Craigs List with pictures and offer a reward. Being in Rescue, you know this is a story we hear over and over with timid dogs that get adopted out. Even though I have nh 8 foot tall, wood privacy fence....If I have a timid dog with me (either watching a friends dog or a foster) I don't even let it go in the yard without a lead on......they can be real escape artists when they panic.

Please keep us updated and try not to loose faith. Hopefully, the pup will get tired, hungry or get sore pads and will not be able to run anymore...as was the case with my friends dog...the pads of his feet were so cut up he just couldn't outrun the man that spotted him as he crossed a wide open field.

Thanks for the encouragement Linda. We are hoping and praying that he'll be found. I know you're right you do hear this story again and again and every time it just makes me feel sick to think of one of these little guys on the loose. But when you've loved, fostered and invested time into one, it's so much more heartbreaking (if that's even possible).

We did get it on Craigs List and feel sure we've blanketed the area with flyers and emails. I think if he's found, we'll get him back. We just keep praying he's found or maybe caught is the right word. Too bad these scared little guys just don't realize how loved they are!

Thanks again for your help and encouragement.

Great news! The dog was found. Apparently he was found by a worker at a nearby hotel. They kept him over night at the hotel, knew he was sweet and must belong to someone. Today the guy took him to a local vet who had the flyers on the missing dog! Yeah for Pico! They say he's in good shape and are currently making arrangements to get him picked up them.

Thank you all for your prayers, suggestions and good thought!

FANTASTIC NEWS, TRENA!!!!! dance_for_joy.gif dance_for_joy.gif I bet the family is overjoyed and Pico will recover quickly from his "adventure"......it's great when you have a good outcome......and this experience will only lead to a family who is now more aware of what can happen when you let your guard up for just a split second. When you can...post a picture of Pico.
