I was very honored to be asked to paint Jane's beloved Sophie. Since Sophie loved to sit beside the pond in he yard, Jane asked me to paint her with a pond inspired background. You can view it on my blog:

The representation of how you portrayed Sophie is why I think your paintings are amazing. The background, which Sophie enjoyed to do...sit by the pond....speaks volumns.

About the setting, when Sophie was a new puppy, our pond was elevated about 3 feet off the ground, so I didn't worry about her falling in. One day on a potty trip, she unexpectedly took a leap and landed smack in the middle. Talk about shocked! Our neighbors little Min Pin had done the exact thing when he was new.

When we put it back in the traditional ground setting, she chose to make a game of drinking pond water, thus a constant "Sophie, get away from there". Our fish and lilies were prolific as I used a UV sterilizer and amplified filtration, so it was not a real concern with the drinking, still didn't want her doing so. She would start towards the pond, then slyly turn to see if we were watching. The dragonflies as well as frogs fascinated her too it seemed. Two days after she passed, I looked out the window, and knew after 20 years, the pond had to come out, too many memories.

This was the perfect background for Sophie, and Gwen did such an excellent job of capturing them both.

sad.gif Is it gone? I probably have done the opposite and did every thing I could do to preserve it so I could have the memories . . .but that is me. Regardless it is captured in the painting wub.gif

Yes, it's gone. Joe, I had too many what ifs. What if she picked up a microbe of some sort that started the cancer. I think this thought came from the fact that Portuguese Water Dogs are the number one that get hemangiosarcoma. Our raw food maker has Porties, and they simply can't seem to stay out of any body of water, always are wet with creek water when we go there. I doubt it's possible to be a source, but I couldn't free my mind of it.

I love it. I mostly love Sophie's eyes and I found myself getting very misty as I looked at her. What a wonderful portrait.
