I have been crying since 8:45am when my sister came up and asked me which cage was the one above the turtles. I was like, "What, Why??" She said, Meanie my Parakeet was at the bottom of the cage dead. She left my room and I starting crying on the spot. As most of you know I breed Parakeets. My orignal parakeet are Bugle, Mama Tweet, Booger, Stewart, whom passed last year and Mr. Tweekers. When I paired them all off Mr. Tweekers needed a girlfriend. So I went off to the pet shop with my dad October 8th 2010. I talked to the women for awhile and said they had some year old parakeets for sale. Perfect age for Mr. Tweekers since he was about a year old at the time.
My dad and I watched all the birdies hop around and interacting with eachother. There was one that stood out. She seemed to always be the one at the top of the perches, the one whom kept everyone in order, the most bright eyed, and she stood out. My dad purchased her for me and I took her home.
The name Meanie came about a week into owning her, she bit like no other and screamed like no other. When she had her first clutch of babies about two months after purchasing her. It turns out she was a great mommy. She was only mean because her hormones were wacky and she was in a new home. Her first clutch of eggs were hatched out December 12th and 13th and only consisted of 2 chicks. When they hatched and grew feathers it turns out she had 1 boy whom looks like her and 1 girl whom looks like Mr. Tweekers. They are named Azure and Periwinkle. In the Spring and Summer of 2011 she had 2 clutches of eggs both consisting of 5 eggs each. All the chicks were a mix of Mom and Dad.
Meanie May had bonded with me through the last 2 years. She came to trust me, let me pet her every morning and every night. She even let me hold her chicks and would nibble on my fingers while I was in the nest box, she didn't mind at all. Unlike many other female parakeets. She was also a fiesty one. Every morning she was the first one I heard screaming, SHE wanted the Attention, no one was going to get it until I said Hi to her first. This morning I really missed that. I really did and I am broken today. If anyone else tried to pet her she would scream and bite hard. With me it was different, she never bit me since she had bonded with me and she was a good bird. To make matters more heartbreaking her mate, Mr. Tweekers has been noisy as ever, he is calling her and everything. Pacing around the cage just waiting for me to put her back in there. Just yesterday they were getting ready for the 2012 breeding season, building their nest and everything.
Last night before I put them to bed I shut everyones light off and of course Meanie May's had to be last. I said goodnight to her and she came up to my finger and looked at me for the last time. I wish I knew it was the last, I would of left the light on just a little bit longer.
Thank You all for listening to my story. Most people don't realize how much personality a little creature such as a parakeet has. They are all so different. Please don't take any creature for granted. You may be surprised on how much they can impact your life.
RIP Meanie May! I am heart broken today. I have lost a good little friend. I miss her so much!!!

I'm so sorry, Jaime. I know how much you care for each of your critters and how heart-broken you must be. They are your family. Meanie May sure was pretty.

I'm so sorry to hear about your bird. It's tough to lose a pet, even when it's something as little as a parakeet. I had a female sugar glider years ago who was truly a little monster and bit harder than any of her cage mates, and I cried quite a lot when she passed.

Thank You both for your kind words. I seriously can not stop crying today. I know I love my animals and I cry for each one no matter what they are. I even cry for fish. But this really has taken me for a loop. I didn't realize how much this was going to hurt. Maybe it was because I didn't expect it. She was fine yesterday. No sign of any illness what so ever. Everytime I walk past the cage today and can not help but break down. I am not used to her not walking up to me to see what I am doing and waiting for her pet or for me to talk to her. It bothers me too cuz she was so young. Parakeets can live quite a long time. I take my parakeets to the vet for this reason, cuz I know how long you can have them around. I wish I knew what went wrong with her. Mr. Tweekers has been sitting in the corner chewing on his toy since I took her out. I feel so bad for him. I guess I should be grateful I have her sons and daughters with me. It is like having a part of her still with me. Nino didn't eat today because I was crying. He is such a little support system!! I finally got him to eat so no worries there.

Jaime, I know what you mean about losing an animal young. My Tara was only 5 years old when I lost her and it just seemed so senseless and unnecessary. It's not easier when they are old, just different.

Oh I totally know what you mean. It isn't easier at all when they are old. The two I think are different. Take my passed Dalmation who was 16 when he passed and my Cat who was about 19 or so when she passed. It was mighty difficult, because they were with me for so long. Such a long time to get to know them and they been with me through different stages of my life. So that makes it hard. Then when they are young it feels like you were robbed, ya know. My dogs have been extra clingy today. I guess they are trying to help me.

I'm so sorry about Meanie May, Jaime! I know what you mean about the difference. I've always felt a sense of completion with the older ones and the grief is different - still strong and hard but when you lose a young pet unexpectedly, it just hurts. There is a feeling of being robbed, like you said.

I really feel for you. I lost my dear Oshi the parakeet back in 1989 and I still dream about him. I have moved several times since he passed, but I have carried his headstone with me, and always put it in my yard to honor him, They are small in size, but their spirits are very large indeed.

thank you all. i was doing ok until my mom came and hugged me. then i started again. Whew!! It is true. Parakeets are indeed small but i swear they have such different personalities. i have about thirty of them. Some may look alike but they really come into their own. Such neat creatures. love them. Already miss my Meanie so much.

Jaime, I'm so sorry you are going through this. When my husband and I got married in 1994, his cockatiel, "Bud", came to live with us. I had never had a bird, so this was new for me. He was definitely bonded with my husband, so I didn't handle him too much. As long as he was in the cage, he would sing and talk with me. If I was on the phone, we get louder and louder, until I would eventially have to cover him so I could keep up the conversation! They definitely have their own personalities. It sounds like you give all of your animals a great home. Meanie May's bonding with you is proof of that. Hang in there!!

So sorry, Jaime...I have two birds buried in my garden....AB, our Sun Conure...and Noel....a Parrotlette...we have one Pacific Protlette left, who is about 15...hopefully, we'll have her another 10 years. Loosing our feathered friends is such a sad loss :(
