just wanted to introduce you all to the new foster Mijo. He's one of the Arkansas 5 that were in a barn, but IGCA couldn't take him because he's half chi. he's so afraid of people. he runs away and is very nervous, but he's only nervous of people. he spend last night alone and this morning i sat on a dog bed in the kitchen and he sat at the other end of the dog bed and let me pet him for about 10 mi-0oopf (panga says hi) minutes. he hasn't let me touch him since, but he will sniff my hands and come investigate when the girls are getting loved on. I really feel that he can over come this with patience. any and all suggestions would be appreciated. I have tried treats but he's not interested.

He's a cute little thing, isn't he? I don't have any tips, but it is encouraging that he has already allowed you to pet him. I would imagine that with a start like that it is realistic to expect him to come along very well.

I agree with Gwen, that seems like a great start.
Just one thing, when I was trying to encourage Aspen to warm to other people I always asked them to let her come to them and give no eye contact when petting her at first, also pieces of chicken given by everyone she met helped!
I would keep a bag of it in my pocket and any strangers that showed an interest in her I would ask them to give her a piece but not touch her.
She will never be the bravest but last night I had visitors that she had never met before and she was happy to lay beside them on the sofa after about 5 minutes. I am happy with that!!
Good luck with him, he is a very sweet looking boy I'm sure he will come around.

This passion began with my first IG, Tara, who is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge. I love anything that involves IGs; spending time with Allie and Riley, attending East Coast IG Rescue events, SHOPPING for Allie's and Riley's wardrobes, and of course, communicating with other IG Whispers members. Aside from IGs, my interests include reading a variety of genres and being with friends and family, especially my 13 year old niece, Ella. Professionally, I am a reading specialist for first and second grades. Although I enjoy teaching, the best thing about my job is the long summer vacation, during which I am free to spend endless hours with Allie and Riley.

I think you're doing it right....treats treats and more treats...and letting him come to you when he is ready....maybe lay down on the dog bed instead of sitting up?

Routine, routine, routine! Move slowly with purpose, interact on his level. Looming from above is very scary for an unsocialized boy.

Everyone has said what I would say. My first IG, Fig was very afraid of men for the longest time. Routine builds self confidence and when the dog is feeling secure, they can relax and investigate the bigger parts of the world.

Keep extra tantilizing treats in your pockets: I understand little bits of HOT DOG are utterly irresistable.

he wouldn't eat any treats that i offered until just now, no chicken, hot dogs, dog treats, but he likes honey ham! he was sitting by my knee with the girls just waiting for a piece. he doesn't have a fear trigger, just an overall distrust of humans. he just isn't sure what to do, he gets anxious and runs in circles... i just hope that what he learns here he takes with him to his forever home someday

3 am?? Are you an insomniac? I love seeing a photo with Mijo and a human hand in it. He's so pretty. Hank is missing his other "outsider" pal, but I think its good- Hank actually let me touch him yesterday. not pet, exactly, but... He has appointed himself as Ellie's guardian and won't let the other dogs pick on her.

not an insomniac, Daniel stays up late and i always wake up once in the middle of the night and come out to sit with him for a while. I just sat with Mijo instead. Daniel loves talking to Mijo in Spanish... It's really cute

I'm glad that Hank has something to do... He and Margaret are getting a lot better! I really feel for mill dogs, poor things.

He is way cute! Love that face!

I have never had experience first hand with a fearful dog, but I read that Karen Pryor uses clicker training for frightened animals. Such as, she just teaches them a simple little trick, like paw-shake, to build their confidence. Never tried it, but have watched my dog's confidence rise as he got better at the trick I was teaching him.

Hope he learns to not fear soon! If only you knew it Mijo, but we'd all like to kiss your baby face. beatingheart.gif

He is cute!! It's 3:20am here and the picture just woke me up!! It sounds he is little nervous with people. Is he getting along with your girls? I don't really have any good advice but I hope your girls will show him that he doesn't have to be afraid of you.

You have already gotten some great advice Catherine. I would also avoid forcing and flooding him, watching him with hyper-awareness to recognize his subtle signs of stress. His first signals of unease will allow you to give him greater distance and more time so that he won't become overwhelmed with stress, fleeing or becoming reactive. You can also employ a treat-and-retreat strategy. Frequently enter the room where he is. Gradually close the distance between the two of you. Before you see the first lip-lick, eyebrow raise, tail drop or body or ear lowering, toss a treat toward him and leave the room. You can repeat this over and over. Your appearance and increasing closeness will eventually come to be associated with the food and with a quick release of the pressure of your approach. You'll see that you can soon get closer and closer while not detecting any anxiety at all. Best of luck with Mijo.

What a cutie he is!!! You are doing great so far!! Just don't force him into anything and he will get little by little that you are a friend.

I rescued a stray dog years ago and when he finally started to trust people he became a super social dog so I have hopes for this guy that he will have a bright future with a great family.

Oh ok that makes sense. That must have been hard for you. I bet you did get attached! I fostered Hemi for like a week and bawled when he finally went to his home ") But it is what inspired me to sign up to be a foster home for rescued/retiring big boys (Greyhounds")
It is such a journey. And very admirable! Keep up the good work ok?

Emmy's doing well. She hated that I went to work all day today, so she has been even more clingy tonight, but she is such a sweetheart. Her spay is tomorrow and then she'll be adoptable. I will definitely cry when she goes. Although even more than usual, it will have to be the ideal home for her--- She is going to need extra care for the rest of her life.
